Top 10 Highest Mountains in the World

Top 10 highest mountain in the world are Everest, K2, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Nanga Parbat and Annapurna I. Nepal holds the 8 out of 10 highest mountains on the earth. There are all together 14 mountain peaks above 8000 meters yet discovered. The tallest mountain in the world is Mount Everest with the elevation of 8,848 meter. The lowest eight thousand meter peak is Mt Annapurna (8091m). Most of the tallest mountain lies in the Himalayan range. The young mountain “Himalayan Range” is considered as ‘freshwater reservoirs’ in the form of ice, glacier and snow. Today the mountains are extensively affected by the climate change. Sometime the altitude of the mountain are changing because of the snow melting and freezing. The snowcapped mountain peaks are beautiful things and adventurous to climb. This article explains about the top ten highest mountain in the world. Nepal is a single country covers 8 out of 10 highest peaks including Mt Everest.

1. Mount Everest (8848m), Nepal

Mount Everest, Highest Peak in the World

Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world located in eastern Nepal. The mountain is place in the Nepal and China border. The height of the Everest is 8848m above the sea level. Mount Everest is called “Sagarmatha” in Nepali or Chomolungma in Tibetan. Mt Everest got its name after survey by the land  Surveyor General ’Sir George Everest’ that first tried to locate the exact position of the peak. In May 1953, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary reached at the top of Mt Everest for the first time in the history.

2.  Mount K2 (8611m), Pakistan

Mount K2 is the second highest mountain in the world with the height of 8611m. K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen or Chhogori is lies in Pakisthan. It is located on the China-Pakistan border between Baltistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China.[4] K2 is the highest point of the Karakoram range and the highest point in both Pakistan and Xinjiang. The name K2 stands for the 2nd peak in the Karakoram Range. Climbing to K2 is a very difficult task, but still about 300 climbers have successful reached at the top of K2. A huge ice pyramid stands away from all the rest of the peaks of K2. Italian expedition team member Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli reached at the top in 31 July 1954. K2 is considered as difficult climbing peak in compare to Mt Everest.

3. Mount Kanchenjunga (8586m), Nepal

Mount Kanchenjuga, Third Highest Mountain in the World

Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world with the height of 8586 meters. It is located in far eastern Nepal. Mt Kanchenjunga is located in the Nepal-India border. Kanchenjunga is also known as “The Five Treasures of Snows” because it is blessed with five treasures of God that are gold, silver, gems, grains and holy books. Joe Brown and George Band successfully climbed in 1955 for the first time. Kanchenjunga is the second highest mountain of the Himalayas and the top 8000 meter peak in the easternmost part of the earth. Kanchenjunga is the highest mountain range in India.

4. Mount Lhotse (8511m), Nepal

Mount Lhotse is fourth highest mountain in the world. Lhotse is 8511 meters tall peak near by Mt Everest. Lhotse is considered as extremely dangerous mountain to climb because of its dramatic rocky route. Lhotse is located on the border Nepal and Tibet. It is also known as one of the most deadly mountains of the world, because of many failed attempts and fatalities while trying to climb. Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger successful climbed this peak in 1956.

5. Mount Makalu (8462m), Nepal

Mount Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. Makalu has an elevation of 8463 meters from the sea level. Due to the very sharp edges and steep pitches, climbing over the Makalu is quite tough. Makalu is an isolated peak whose shape is a four-sided pyramid. Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy succeesful climbed this peak in 1955, as first people on the earth to climb it.

6. Mount Cho Oyu (8201m), Nepal

Mount Cho Oyu is the sixth highest mountain in world located in the Nepal China border in the Langtang Himalayan Range. Cho Oyu has 8201m meters elevation and possible to climb from both way – Nepal and China side. Cho Oyu is taken as the easiest climbing peak above 8000m. H. Tichy, S. Jochler, Pasang Lama was the first men who reached on Cho Oyu on October 1954.

7.  Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m), Nepal

Mount Dhaulagiri is the seventh highest mountain in the world. The Dhaulagiri is located in north of central Nepal with the elevation of 8167 meters. Dhaulagiri has become the pivot point of the tourists and climbers. The name Dhaulagiri means “White Mountain”. Dhaulagiri also called White Mountains for being one of the eight thousanders list. K. Diemberger, P. Diener, Nyima Dorji, Nawang Doriji were climbed it on May 1960.

8.  Mount Manaslu (8163m), Nepal

Mount Manaslu is eighth highest mountain of the world. Manaslu is 8163 meters high above the sea level. Mount Manaslu is surrounding by rock hard ice which covers a large area at the bottom of the mountain is one of the most interesting things to see. The meaning of the Manaslu is “Mountain of the spirit”. T. Imanishi from Japan became the 1st ever person to climb Manaslu in 1956. Manaslu is taken as high risky avalanches mountain and taken as deadly mountain.

9.  Nanga Parbat (8125m), Pakistan

Nanga Parbat is the ninth tallest mountain of the world. It is located on southern side of Indus River in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.  Nanga Parbat means “Naked Mountain”. The elevation of this Peak is 8125 meters. It is also known as the Killer Mountain because lots of climbers died in the first half of the twentieth century. Hermann Bahl from Australia was the first one to ever climb Nanga Parbat in 1953.

10. Mount Annapurna (8091m), Nepal

Mount Annapurna is tenth highest mountain in the earth. Annapurna is the series of mountains  located in central Nepal with an elevation of 8091 meters. Annapurna is a Sanskrit name which refers as Goddess of the Harvests. This Annapurna peak which is the world’s most dangerous to climb. Annapurna conservation area is first and largest conservation area of Nepal with 7,629 sq. km.  M. Herzog and L.Lachenal from France reaches on this mountain on 3 June 1950 as the first climber.
