Lower Dolpo Trek is wilderness and adventurous trek in isolated area of western Nepal opened in 1982 for foreigners. Lower Dolpa is the remote destination of Nepal which has been listed as the restricted area thus requires special trekking permit to travel. Dolpa Region as known as the land of medicinal herbs is enrich with beautiful culture and geography.
Lower Dolpo Trek starts from Juphal after a short flight from Nepalgunj. As the trekking trail is very strenuous and crosses three high passes of this region like Kagmara La Pass, Baga La Pass and Numa La Pass all above 5000m high and beautiful villages like Tarakot, Tarap, Dho and serveral others. Additionally Lower Dolpa Region also offers various rare and endangered species of wildlife and plants in the forest of Shey Phoksundo National Park. An ethnic group of people with unique lifestyle, beautiful Lakes, isolated Buddhist monasteries are the major attraction of this trek.

Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport where our staff will be waiting to greet you and transfer you to your hotel. After checking in, our team will provide you with a brief overview of the trekking itinerary. Later in the evening, you'll have the opportunity to join your fellow trekkers for a welcome dinner, which is a great chance to get to know one another. The primary focus of the first day is to relax and build connections with your team.
After a hearty breakfast, we'll embark on a sightseeing tour of the city, with the convenience of our own private vehicle and an expert tour guide to lead the way.
Our first stop is Pashupatinath, a renowned Hindu temple that boasts impressive cultural and spiritual significance. Next, we'll visit Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, two striking Buddhist temples with their own unique charm. As the day progresses, we'll head to Kathmandu Durbar Square, where you'll be surrounded by exquisite medieval architecture and cultural landmarks.
During the evening, you'll have some time to shop for any necessary trekking gear or supplies. With market hubs like New Road or Thamel nearby, you'll have easy access to all the components you need. Kathmandu to Nepalgunj takes about an hour by plane, the border with India. It is one of the major cities of Nepal and has access to Mid-western Nepal, including the remote area of Humla.
After breakfast take morning flight to Juphal that offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan foothills, including the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. The flight lasts around 45 minutes and provides excellent visibility. Upon arrival in Juphal, travelers can organize their belongings before embarking on a leisurely walk to Dunai 3hrs.
On the second day of the trek, the trail follows the river and gradually ascends towards a narrow pathway. Along the route, trekkers can enjoy stunning views of a magnificent gorge, surrounded by dense pine forests. The journey culminates with a visit to the charming village of Tarakot.
The trail ascends gradually along a path next to a stream, passing over a bridge on the same stream, before diverging from the river and leading through cultivated fields. Trekkers will encounter some ascents and descents before finally reaching the village of Laini Odar.
After breakfast, the trail continues with an uphill walk alongside the Tarap River gorge. Trekking in this area is a truly unique experience, as you navigate through remote terrain and traverse the river by jumping from one side to the other in narrow passages.
As we trek uphill along the trail, we pass through narrow gorges and eventually arrive at a specific spot along the river. The journey is made more interesting by the presence of juniper bushes and roses along the way. The highlight of the trek is reaching the highest village in Dolpo, Dho-Tarap, where the local inhabitants are of Tibetan origin and have resided here since ancient times.
Exploring the wilderness of Tarap Valley presents a unique opportunity to witness the dominance of the Bon religion among the local Tibetan population, as well as the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and monasteries.
Dho-Tarap offers an unforgettable experience as the journey leads towards the upper Tarap Valley, showcasing a beautiful blend of flat, green landscapes on either side of the river. Trekking further, one can reach the Num-La base camp, passing by several monasteries on the trail through Tarap Valley.
As the trail gradually ascends to the Num-La pass at an altitude of 5,190m, trekkers are treated to stunning views of the barren Trans-Himalayan landscapes of Dolpo and Dhaulagiri. This portion of the trek is known to be one of the most challenging and adventurous, culminating with a descent to Pelung Tang.
Today presents another challenging day as we make our way to the Baga-La pass, located at an altitude of 5,070m. The trail features a steep ascent towards the pass, offering spectacular views of the Trans-Himalayan region, including the snow-capped peak of Kanjirowa Himal and its barren landscapes. The journey concludes with a descent towards Dajok Tang.
Today's journey involves an easy descent through barren yak pastures and shrubs, featuring alpine vegetation along the trail as we make our way towards the Phoksundo Lake.
Today is a day of rest after a long trek through the Trans-Himalayan region. It presents an opportunity to explore the stunning Alpine Phoksundo Lake and the nearby Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.
As we explore the Alpine beauty of Phoksundo Lake, we can also take note of the easy descent towards Chhepka. Along the way, we pass by small settlements where traditional medical herbs are used for attention and care in Dolpo, which are known as AMCHI.
After Breakfast, our journey continues as we descend towards Shulighat, which serves as the checkpoint for the Shy-Phoksundo National Park. From there, we cross the Bheri River and gradually make our way up towards Juphal.
We begin our day early by catching a flight to Nepalgunj, followed by another flight to Kathmandu as soon as one becomes available.
